this is an independent, highly selective & mutually exclusive portrayal of    grell sutcliff    from yana toboso's kuroshitsuji. i'll say now, that i've only ever read bits and pieces from the manga, mostly grell scenes. my portrayal will be primarily based on the anime until i can get my hands on the manga and actually read it. some elements from the manga will be present, as i'm aware of certain things. grell is a trans woman and will be referred to as she / her at all times. failure to comply will lead to an immediate unfollow. if you can't respect her identity, there's really no point in resuming interactions. i do have certain headcanons that narrate the transphobia she has faced over the years, but those will never be romanticised or glorified. and they certainly don't give anyone the right to be an actual transphobe. i'm well aware that grell is very much treated as the comic relief in the animanga, but please, do not randomly attack or hit her just because your character does so in the animanga. she's not a punching bag and she will fight back, if necessary. this doesn't apply, if we're writing a battle thread.

 name(s):  born gerhard sutcliff, the name of her late paternal grandfather. she later changed it to grell, in order to officially transition to the best of her abilities and with whatever means available during the era.
 species:  she was born human, took her own life and woke up as a grim reaper, much to her dismay.
 birth:  december 24th, in london. she doesn't remember the exact date.

 significant others:  she was engaged to a woman, named elizabeth ashford when she was still mortal. however, that engagement was forced on her, along with her father's expectations for grell to act like a man and marry a fair maiden. the engagement was absolved when grell passed away. she's had several flings during her time as a shinigami, but nothing she would consider serious.
 parents:  johanna sutcliff ( mother, deceased ), randolph sutcliff ( father, deceased ), gerhard sutcliff i ( paternal grandfather, deceased ).

    on sebastian & william :         while grell does express a significant attraction to both sebastian and william, she is not actually in love with either of them. she's never explicitly stated being in love with them and she never will, unless it's an established ship.    on madame red :         although her relationship with madam red was entirely platonic and only a business transaction, grell did feel some attraction towards her. mostly because madam red was what grell always wanted to be : a beautiful woman. it's also the reason she's kept madam red's coat. there were no romantic feelings involved. ever.

lore:  grim reaper details.

grim reapers can assume a human form and make themselves visible to all humans. grell typically uses her old, human appearance ( brown hair, round glasses ) to blend in with human society. she doesn't particularly enjoy doing so because it brings back bad memories, but she will resort to it if necessary. she finds that her plain appearance from back then isn't easily noticeable, as opposed to her flamboyant one she uses now.

 immortality:  as a grim reaper, grell is immortal and doesn't age physically.
 enhanced agility:  Grim Reapers are considerably more agile than humans; it is as though they are " defying gravity "
 enhanced endurance:  Grim Reapers are appreciably tough, for they are able to endure attacks that could have killed a human.
 invisibility:  Grim Reapers can turn themselves invisible to humans. However, humans close to death may still notice concealed Grim Reapers.
 soul review / collection:  By using their Death Scythes, Grim Reapers can review a dying soul's memories, via its Cinematic Record, and retrieve the soul, once the formal assessment is finished.

although grim reapers aren't mortal, they still need to eat and sleep. grell is an insomniac, so sleeping doesn't come easy to her.

meta,   headcanons.

these are my very own, personal headcanons. some of them may not align with your visual of grell, but i do implore you to at least respect them when writing with me. please, don't take inspiration from my headcanons.

DEATH WEARS PRADA.

    warning !         this section will have mentions of very sensitive topics and may not be suitable for all audiences. proceed at your own risk.

grell's birth mother was german. thus, she's fluent in the german language and has been since she was a child. she used it frequently while her father was around, in order to give herself and her mother some privacy. her father always scolded grell and demanded that she spoke english in his presence because he never bothered to learn his wife's native tongue. to this day, grell will babble in german, when she's stressed or otherwise upset.as a child, she would try on her mother's makeup, in order to feel pretty and feminine. that was, until her father found out and admonished her for it, claiming that " men do not wear makeup " and that grell should " act like a real man at this age ".her father was both verbally and physically abusive. he was a high judge at the british court and was a very no nonsense kind of person, who didn't approve of grell's effeminate inclinations. he tried to wed her to several women, but grell purposely blew each engagement to ensure she wouldn't have to tie herself to a woman.she despises any kind of meat, which basically makes her vegetarian, but it's not out of pity for the animals. she has always despised the texture of meat and it was the only food she would refuse to consume, even while mortal. her father would force her to finish her portion, regardless, which resulted in her associating meat with traumatic experiences. thus, she will not give it a second chance and will go as far as to excuse herself if she's at a table where meat is served.her spice tolerance is monstrous and well known amongst her grim reaper peers. she can eat the spiciest dishes and not even break a sweat.she was in her late twenties when her mother got sick and passed away. grell was so distraught over the loss and so terrified of what her father would do without his wife holding him back, that grell ended up taking her own life by falling from the rooftop of the sutcliff mansion.

this is the default verse i will be using for all interactions and it follows the plotline of the animanga. grell will be written at different points of the story, depending on the muse i'm writing against, the inspiration of the moment and the other writer's familiarity with the source material.
